Water filtration and air filtration may look like two different applications, but they share one important point: the structure of the filter media decides the final performance. A nonwoven filter material is not only judged by its weight or thickness. Fiber diameter, bonding method, pore structure, surface treatment and composite design all influence the final result.

Why nonwoven filter media is widely used

Nonwoven materials can be engineered for different filtration levels, air resistance, liquid flow rate, dust holding capacity and adsorption performance. This flexibility makes them suitable for air purifiers, HVAC systems, industrial filtration, water filtration and medical or respiratory filter components.

  • Fiber structure: finer fibers usually improve capture efficiency, while thicker fibers may support strength and dust holding.
  • Pore size distribution: controlled pore size helps balance filtration accuracy and flow resistance.
  • Basis weight: GSM affects thickness, strength and capacity, but it should not be evaluated alone.
  • Composite design: PP, PET, meltblown, activated carbon, electrostatic layers and support layers can be combined for different applications.
  • Application environment: liquid filtration, air filtration and medical filtration require different test logic.

For water filtration, buyers often care about sediment capture, liquid flow, chemical compatibility and whether activated carbon or adsorption layers are needed. For air filtration, buyers usually focus on filtration efficiency, pressure drop, dust holding capacity and long-term stability.

When selecting nonwoven filter media, the buyer should provide application, target filtration efficiency, flow rate or pressure drop, material preference, size requirement and whether the material will be laminated, pleated, die-cut or used as a roll.
